Hey there! If you’re a high schooler or a first-year college student looking to make your mark, you’ve landed in the right place. At African Immigrant Family Services (AIFS), we know that our youth aren't just the "leaders of tomorrow", you are the leaders of right now.
Growing up in a new country or navigating life as a child of immigrants comes with a unique set of challenges, but it also gives you an incredible set of strengths. You’re already a bridge-builder, a multilingual communicator, and a resilient problem-solver. Our Youth Leadership Program is designed to take those natural talents and turn them into the professional skills you need to crush it in college, your career, and your community.
Why This Program Matters
Let’s be real: the transition from high school to adulthood is a lot. Whether you're trying to figure out how to write a resume that actually gets noticed, or you're looking for a group of people who understand what it's like to balance two cultures, it can feel like you're doing it all on your own.
The AIFS Youth Leadership Program was built by our community, for our community. We provide a space where you can ask the "stupid" questions, try out new things without fear of failure, and get the mentorship you need to thrive. We’re not just teaching you how to lead; we’re helping you find your voice.

What You’ll Be Diving Into
We’ve packed this program with the stuff they don’t always teach you in the classroom. We focus on four main pillars that will give you a major head start:
1. Leadership & Mentorship Skills
Leadership isn't just about standing at the front of the room. It’s about empathy, adaptability, and knowing how to support the people around you. You’ll be paired with mentors who have been in your shoes, professionals and community leaders who understand the immigrant and refugee experience. They aren't just here to give advice; they’re here to walk alongside you as you navigate your path.
2. Job Readiness & Professional Development
Getting your first "real" job can feel like a maze. We break it down into easy steps. From crafting a killer resume and cover letter to mastering the art of the interview, we’ve got your back. We also talk about "soft skills", things like networking, professional etiquette, and how to advocate for yourself in the workplace. These are the skills that turn a job into a career.
3. Communication Skills
Whether you’re giving a presentation in class or explaining your ideas to a future boss, communication is everything. We work on public speaking, active listening, and conflict resolution. Because many of our participants speak multiple languages (like French, Swahili, or Arabic), we also talk about how to use those linguistic skills as a superpower in your professional life.
4. Digital Media & Content Creation
The world is digital, and we want you to be the one creating the content, not just consuming it. Through our Communications & Digital Media Center, you’ll get hands-on experience with:
- Video Production & Editing: Learn how to tell a story through the lens.
- Photography: Capture the beauty and reality of our community.
- Graphic Design: Create visuals that grab attention.
- Social Media Strategy: Understand how to use platforms to build a brand or advocate for a cause.

The Perks (What’s in it for You?)
We know you’re busy. Between school, family responsibilities, and maybe even a part-time job, your time is valuable. That’s why we make sure this program is a win-win for you.
- Weekly Participation Incentives: We value your time and commitment. Participants receive weekly incentives to help with the costs of being a student.
- Verified Volunteer Service Hours: Need hours for graduation or your college applications? We’ve got you covered. All the leadership and community work you do here counts.
- College & Career Building: By the time you finish the program, you’ll have a portfolio of work and a resume that stands out from the crowd.
- Hands-on Experience: You won't just be sitting and listening to lectures. You’ll be leading projects, creating media, and making a real impact.
- Safe, Supportive Learning Environment: This is a place where you can be yourself. We celebrate our diverse African heritage and create a "home away from home" vibe.

A Message to Parents and Families
At AIFS, we are a compassionate, family-first organization. We understand that as parents, you want the absolute best for your children. You’ve worked hard to provide them with opportunities, and we are here to support that mission.
Our program provides a supervised, productive, and culturally sensitive environment where your kids can grow. We encourage our youth to stay connected to their roots while gaining the skills they need to succeed in the American professional world. If you have questions in French, Swahili, or Arabic, please don't hesitate to reach out. We are here to serve our entire community.
