A Historic Milestone: AIFS Launches New Health Center and Web TV!

Yesterday was a day that will be etched into the history of our community forever. On April 10, 2026, the air in Omaha was filled with a special kind of electricity. We gathered together, neighbors, friends, partners, and family, to witness a dream finally taking flight.

At African Immigrant Family Services (AIFS), our mission has always been about more than just "providing services." It’s about building a home away from home and creating a future where every member of our community can thrive. Yesterday, we took two giant leaps toward that future with the official grand opening of the AIFS Health Screening & Education Center and AIFS Web TV.

If you couldn’t make it to the ribbon-cutting, don’t worry: we’re bringing the highlights to you. Here’s why this milestone is such a game-changer for african immigrant services and refugee services in Nebraska.

A New Sanctuary for Health and Wellness

Let’s be honest: navigating the healthcare system in the U.S. can feel like trying to find your way through a thick fog without a map. Between the complex insurance rules, the medical jargon, and the fear of not being understood, many of our brothers and sisters simply stop trying to get the care they need.

The AIFS Health Screening & Education Center was born out of a desire to clear that fog. This isn't just another clinic; it is a culturally specific sanctuary. We recognized that to truly serve our community, we needed a space where language isn't a barrier and where our cultural traditions are respected, not ignored.

The center will provide vital screenings and wellness education tailored specifically to the needs of African immigrant and refugee families. Whether it’s understanding chronic conditions, navigating nutrition in a new environment, or simply having a safe place to ask questions, the center is here for you. We want to ensure that every family has access to the community resources for immigrants in Omaha that can literally save lives.

This center also addresses the critical need for mental health support. As we’ve discussed in our previous guide on breaking the stigma around mental health, wellness is about the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.

Amplifying Our Voices: AIFS Web TV

While the Health Center cares for our bodies, AIFS Web TV is here to nourish our souls and amplify our voices.

For too long, the stories of African immigrants in Nebraska have been told by others, or worse, not told at all. AIFS Web TV changes the narrative. This is our platform. It’s a digital bridge that connects our rich heritage with our new lives here in the States.

One of the most exciting parts? We aren't sticking to just one language. To be truly inclusive, AIFS Web TV will broadcast content in:

  • English
  • French
  • Swahili
  • Arabic

By sharing success stories, practical advice, and cultural celebrations in the languages we speak at home, we are ensuring that no one is left behind. Whether you are looking for a guide to the Nebraska school system or want to hear from leaders in our Youth Leadership Program, AIFS Web TV will be your go-to source.

A Heartfelt Thank You to Our Partners

An achievement of this scale doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It takes a village: and what an incredible village we have.

We want to extend a massive, heartfelt thank you to the Omaha Community Foundation. Their support through the "Building Healthy Futures" grant was the catalyst that turned this vision into a reality. Their commitment to equity and community health has provided us with the resources and technical accompaniment necessary to launch the Health Screening & Education Center. They didn't just give us a grant; they stood beside us as partners in progress.

We also want to thank our technical and financial partners who believed in the power of community-led initiatives. Your investment in AIFS is an investment in the thousands of families who will walk through these doors or tune into our broadcasts to find help, hope, and connection.

The Celebration: Culture, Joy, and Community

The grand opening wasn't just a formal event; it was a celebration of our resilience. There was music that made you want to move, food that tasted like home, and a sense of pride that was visible on every face.

Our Founder and Executive Director, Adama Sawadogo, shared some moving words during the ceremony. He reminded us that these new facilities are tools for empowerment. "We are not just providing services," he said, "we are building a family."

The event felt like a reunion. It reminded us that while we may have come from different countries and speak different languages, we are united by our shared journey and our shared dreams for our children. It was a beautiful reminder of why AIFS services in Omaha are so vital to the fabric of this city.

Why This Matters Now

You might be wondering, "Why launch these now?" The timing couldn't be more critical. With changes to systems like Nebraska Medicaid work requirements, our community needs reliable, clear information more than ever. The Health Center and the Web TV provide the infrastructure to deliver that information quickly and accurately.

Furthermore, as the population of African immigrants and refugees continues to grow in Nebraska, the demand for culturally specific services has never been higher. We are filling a gap that has existed for far too long.

How You Can Get Involved

This is just the beginning. The doors are open, and the cameras are rolling, but we need you to help us keep the momentum going.

  1. Visit the Center: If you or a family member needs a health screening or wants to learn more about staying healthy, come see us! Our staff is ready to welcome you with open arms.
  2. Tune In: Subscribe to AIFS Web TV. Watch the stories, share them with your friends, and let us know what topics you want to see covered.
  3. Support our Mission: As a nonprofit, we rely on the generosity of our community. Whether through a donation or volunteering your time, you can help us sustain these vital programs. Check out our charity page to see how you can help.
  4. Spread the Word: Tell your neighbors about these new refugee services in Nebraska. Many people are still struggling in silence because they don't know these resources exist.

Looking Toward the Future

As we look back on yesterday’s festivities, we are filled with gratitude. But we are also looking forward. These two new initiatives are the foundation for even greater things to come.

We envision the Health Screening & Education Center becoming a hub for community wellness, and AIFS Web TV becoming the premier voice for the African diaspora in the Midwest. We are committed to constantly evolving to meet the needs of our families, whether that’s through educational guides or annual celebrations of success.

To everyone who attended, everyone who donated, and everyone who sent a kind word of encouragement: Thank you. You are the reason we do what we do.

Let’s keep building, keep growing, and keep staying healthy: together.

Welcome to the new era of AIFS!
