Healthy Kids, Strong Community: Inside the AIFS Health Screening & Education Center

At African Immigrant Family Services (AIFS), we believe that a healthy community starts with our children. For many of us who have moved across the world to call Nebraska home, the journey is filled with hope, but it also comes with its fair share of hurdles. Navigating a new country is hard enough: trying to figure out a complex healthcare system on top of that can feel overwhelming.

That is why we are so incredibly proud to share some big news. Thanks to the support of the Healthy Futures Building Grant, AIFS has officially launched the Health Screening & Education Center. This isn't just a clinic; it’s a dedicated space designed specifically for African immigrant and refugee children and youth in Omaha. It’s a place where culture is respected, languages are understood, and health is a shared priority.

In this post, we’re taking you behind the scenes to show you what this center means for our families, how we’re using this new grant to change lives, and why preventive care is the best gift we can give our kids.

Why a Dedicated Center Matters

We know that for many families in our community, going to a standard doctor’s office can be a stressful experience. There are forms to fill out in a language that might not be your first, medical jargon that doesn’t always translate well into French, Swahili, or Arabic, and a general feeling of being "rushed" through an appointment.

Research and our own experiences tell us that children in immigrant and refugee families often face unique challenges:

  • Limited Access to Preventive Care: Many families only see a doctor when someone is already very sick, rather than going for regular check-ups.
  • Language Barriers: If you can’t explain your child’s symptoms or understand the doctor’s advice, quality care becomes nearly impossible.
  • Cultural Nuances: Healthcare in the U.S. looks very different from healthcare in many African nations. Understanding things like vaccination schedules or nutrition guidelines requires a culturally sensitive approach.
  • System Navigation: How do you get a referral? What is a co-pay? These are questions that can stop a family from seeking help altogether.

Our new center was created to bridge these gaps. We aren’t just looking at medical charts; we are looking at the whole child and the whole family.

What the Healthy Futures Building Grant Made Possible

Launching a project like this requires more than just a vision: it requires resources. The Healthy Futures Building Grant has been a game-changer for AIFS. Because of this partnership, we were able to turn our dreams into a reality.

First, we were able to establish the physical center. We’ve integrated screening operations directly into our existing youth programming. This means that while your kids are here for after-school activities or community events, they also have access to vital health check-ups. It makes healthcare a natural part of their day-to-side life, rather than a scary "extra" trip to a hospital.

Second, the grant allowed us to invest in essential equipment and materials. We’ve procured high-quality screening tools and set up dedicated stations that are safe, efficient, and welcoming. Whether it’s checking a child’s vision, hearing, or growth milestones, we have the tools to do it right.

Finally, it has allowed us to focus on service delivery. We aren’t just checking boxes; we are initiating preventive health screenings that catch potential risks early. Early identification is the key to preventing long-term health issues, and this grant has given us the capacity to provide immediate guidance to parents the moment a concern arises.

Our Core Services: How We Help

The AIFS Health Screening & Education Center is built on several "pillars" of service. Here is a breakdown of what families can expect when they walk through our doors:

1. Routine Preventive Health Screenings

Regular check-ups are the foundation of a healthy life. We provide screenings for children and youth to monitor their physical development and overall wellness. By catching issues early: like nutritional deficiencies or developmental delays: we can ensure every child has the opportunity to thrive.

2. Early Detection and Risk Identification

Sometimes, health issues aren't obvious. Our trained staff looks for early risk indicators that might otherwise go unnoticed. Whether it’s a vision problem that might affect a student’s performance in school or a dental issue that could cause pain later on, we are here to spot it first.

3. One-on-One Health Education

Knowledge is power. We don’t just give you a result and send you on your way. We sit down with parents and youth to explain what the findings mean. We provide wellness guidance that fits your lifestyle, your diet, and your cultural traditions.

4. Referral Coordination and Care Navigation

If a screening shows that a child needs specialized care, we don’t leave the family to figure it out alone. We coordinate referrals with local healthcare providers and act as a "navigator" to help you understand the next steps. We help you make the appointments, understand the paperwork, and ensure your child gets the follow-up care they deserve.

Building Trust Through Compassion

One of the most important things we do at the center isn't listed on a medical chart: we build trust. For a family that has recently arrived in Omaha, the world can feel very big and very cold. Our center is staffed by people who understand the African immigrant experience.

When a mother comes in and hears a familiar greeting in her native tongue, her shoulders drop. She feels safe. When a father realizes that he can ask "silly" questions about American vitamins without being judged, he becomes a more confident advocate for his child’s health.

We are seeing the impact of this trust every day. We see more families coming in for "wellness" instead of just "sickness." We see teenagers taking an interest in their own health education. We see a community that is becoming more proactive and less reactive when it comes to medical needs.

A Look Toward the Future

While we are celebrating the launch of the center, we are also looking ahead. We have big plans to ensure that no child in our community falls through the cracks. Our next steps include:

  • Expanding Our Reach: We want to bring our screening services to every single youth program AIFS offers, making it even easier for families to get the help they need.
  • Stronger Partnerships: We are working to build even deeper ties with pediatricians and specialty providers across Nebraska to ensure our referral network is the best it can be.
  • Youth Wellness Workshops: We plan to launch interactive workshops where youth can learn about mental health, nutrition, and physical activity in a fun, peer-supported environment.
  • Data-Driven Success: We are implementing new tracking and reporting dashboards to measure our impact and ensure we are meeting the needs of our community effectively.

Our Commitment to You

At the end of the day, the Health Screening & Education Center belongs to you: our community. AIFS remains deeply committed to advancing health equity. We believe that every child: regardless of their background, the language they speak, or where they were born: deserves access to high-quality preventive care.

We want to thank the funders of the Healthy Futures Building Grant for believing in our mission. And most importantly, we want to thank the families who trust us with their children’s health every day.
